In the News: Alumna Makes 'Healthy' Career Choice

Posted: February 16, 2015

Mariah Brown, '14, is helping the Buffalo community to eat healthier—one bell pepper at a time. The health and wellness grad was recently interviewed by Scott Scanlon, lecturer of communication and editor of Refresh, the Buffalo News’ health section.

“Variety is key,” said Brown, when asked the most important thing she learned at Buffalo State about proper nutrition. “You want to try to get as many fruits and vegetables as possible…People always laugh because I almost always have a whole bell pepper for lunch.”

At Buffalo State, Brown was a Muriel A. Howard Honors Program student, a Rogers Scholarship recipient, and a star athlete, winning several awards and competitions for the women’s track and field team. She was also a champion student, helping to create a community garden at an outreach center as part of an internship.

Brown put her experiences on the field and in the classroom to good use immediately after graduation. She is now a health promotion specialist at the Wellness Institute of Greater Buffalo and runs workshops for local community organizations and businesses.
